A contemporary wood-fired interpretation of the classic Song-dynasty Watermelon-Spot glaze, re-created through traditional dragon-kiln firing to evoke the mineral depth and atmospheric tension of historical Jian ware.
The bowl is wheel-thrown according to the form archetypes of excavated Song Jian ware, reflecting the proportions and understated silhouettes found in surviving eleventh–twelfth century pieces. Its glaze develops a dense black core that diffuses outward into soft russet speckles—an effect shaped by strong reduction, falling mineral ash, and the shifting flame paths unique to wood firing. Unlike many modern “antiqued” bowls that rely on acid-washing to mimic age, this piece attains its subdued rustic character through long-term burial, allowing natural mineral interaction and moisture to impart a time-softened surface closer to genuine archaeological aging.
Handmade and wood-fired in Jianyang, Fujian, using local iron-rich clay and naturally iron-bearing mineral glaze. Each firing yields its own balance of flame, atmosphere, and ash, ensuring that every bowl remains inherently one of one.
